Early Life:

Born in Jatt Randhawa in 1995, Arfa Karim Randhawa is a student from Faisalabad, Pakistan who became the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in 2004 at the age of nine, a title he held until 2008. She was invited by Bill Gates to lead Microsoft’s US headquarters. Her vice president of software development, Somasegar, wrote about this on her own blog.

Career:

After returning to Pakistan from a visit to Microsoft headquarters, Arfa was interviewed by numerous TV and newspapers. On 2 August 2005 Fatima On the occasion of the 113th anniversary of his Jinnah’s birth, Arfa was awarded the Fatima Jinnah Gold Medal in Science and Technology by Pakistani Prime Minister  Shaukat Aziz. She also received Pakistan Youth Award  from the President of Pakistan in August 2005.  Arfa also won the 2005 Pride of Performance. This is a civic Honor usually given to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their respective fields over a long period of time. She is the youngest recipient of this award. Arfa was appointed as Pakistan Telecommunications Company’s brand ambassador for her 3G wireless broadband service ‘EVO’ in January 2010.

Arfa passed Microsoft’s exam in 2004, Bill Gates was very impressed with her and invited her to the US headquarters of his company.

Pride of Pakistan

ARFA became the pride of our country when she was only nine years old. She achieved the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional award at this young age. Her representation in various prestigious technology related events, including Tech Ed Conference, made our country proud in the whole world.  

Death of Arfa Karim:

In 2011, at the age of 16, Arfa Karim attended sophomore year of high school at

Lahore Grammar School Paragon Campus. On December 22, 2011, she suffered a cardiac arrest that damaged her brain and she was hospitalized in critical condition.

On January 9, 2012,  Microsoft chairman Bill Gates contacted her parents and ordered doctors to take “all means” to treat her. Gates set up a special committee of international doctors who communicated with local doctors through conference calls. The commission obtained details of her illness and assisted in her diagnosis and treatment. A local doctor declines her option to move her to another hospital because she is on a ventilator and in critical condition. Arfa’s family praised Bill Gates and offered to pay for his medical bills. Arfa died at the age of 16 in a hospital in Lahore on  January 14, 2012. Her funeral was held the next day.

ARFA Software Technology Park Lahore

The name “Lahore Technology Park” was changed to “Arfa Software Technology Park” by the Prime Minister of Punjab. The youngest Microsoft Certified Professional, named after Miss Arfa Karim, who died at the age of 16.
